Shûôshi’s “Truth in Nature, Truth in Literature”

Mizuhara Shûôshi’s “Truth in Nature, Truth in Literature

After several issues, haijinx suspended publication in 2003 during the preparation of our first print issue. That issue had as its focus Mizuhara Shûôshi and, upon my request, Hiroaki Sato graciously translated Mizuhara Shûôshi’s essay for haijinx. When publication suspended, he gave haijinx permission to publish the essay when activity resumed.

After haijinx went completely dark, Charles Trumbull sent a request for items for Modern Haiku. Sato decided it would be best to publish the Shûôshi piece there rather than leave it in limbo. We here at haijinx certainly understand the value of Shûôshi’s piece and are very happy that it was made available to the community.

Sato expanded this for the original publication in Modern Haiku 38.3 (Autumn 2007). With thanks to Charles Trumbull, the complete Modern Haiku version with additional material is now available on haijinx as a PDF [Shuoshi.MH38.3].

Great thanks from us to Hiroaki Sato for undertaking the project for haijinx originally and to Charles Trumbull and Modern Haiku for publishing the piece originally.

This article is reproduced here with permission from both Hiroaki Sato and Charles Trumbull of Modern Haiku.
