biography

Debra Woolard Bender (Debi) is a poet/artist living in Orlando, Florida. She wrote her first haiku when introduced to the 5-7-5 variety in high school during the 1960's, as she was developing a strong interest in poetry. In the mid 1970's, while taking college courses, she attended poetry seminars and a workshop given by a visiting poet/playwright, which kindled her interest in poetry. From there she began to submit her poetry to publications and was pleased and surprised to be included in a library-reference anthology tome. In the 80's she stopped writing and submissions almost completely. Finding haiku on the web, in the freer contemporary styles resparked her interest, and she was hooked. She has furthered her studies and writing into other Asian genre short-forms, including haiga, haibun, tanka, sijo, and others.

Debra is the webmaster of her Asian poetry genre website, Paper Lanterns. She is the World Haiku Club Development Advisor as well as their co-webmaster.

Debra is also the Editor in Chief of World Haiku Review, the journal of the WHC.
