biography

Born in Hampton VA in 1926, Gene Williamson attended the College of William and Mary and the University of Cincinnati following his service in the Navy during World War II. He has been writing professionally since 1951 in marketing, broadcasting, and publishing. For 21 years he was on the staff of U.S.News & World Report, based in Washington DC. Upon early retirement from the magazine in 1981 he and his wife Nancy moved to the South Jersey Shore where he has been an active freelance writer.

Gene has been writing haiku for more than 20 years. The first of his published haiku appeared in the October 1980 issue of Dragonfly, published and edited by Lorraine Harr. Gene took a recess from haiku for six years while researching his books (see below).

Since his return two years ago, his haiku have appeared in the top magazines as well as the Haiku Society of America's Members Anthology 2000 and stone frog: American Haibun & Haiga, Volume 2. His haiku is also scheduled to appear in the HSA Members Anthology 2001.

chapbooks, books, collections, & anthologies

Gene is a published author of four books dealing with the history of the people and places on the Chesapeake. Three of these books (still in print) were published by Heritage Books Inc. They are: Of the Sea and Skies, Chesapeake Conflict, and Guns on the Chesapeake. The most recent, published online in late 2000 by GreatUnpublished.com, is a book-length narrative poem entitled "We Claim Right of Possession: The Saga of William Claiborne". A collection of Gene's poetry, now with the publisher, is entitled The Olfactory Organ Recital and other poems and includes a number of his haiku.

Previous credits include: Dragonfly, Modern Haiku, Frogpond, Wind Chimes, Brussels Sprout, Virtual Image, Red Pagoda, New Cicada, Mainichi Daily News, and others. His poems and articles have appeared in various publications.
