biography

Juanito Escareal (b. May 3, 1946) lives in El Sobrante, Calif., USA. He is originally from the Philippines where he graduated from the University of Manila, with a Liberal Arts degree. After two years in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, as an overseas worker, he came to the U.S. in 1979, working in various office jobs. He now works as an office assistant in the University of California System.

Juanito discovered haiku in 1996 through the Shiki Haiku Salon. Since 1999, he has been a regular contributor to Fuyoh/Rose Mallow Haiku Quarterly (Japan). He also had haiku, tanka, and renku published (mostly in e-zine publications).

contests & awards

Juanito has done well in a few contests, including: honorable mention in the 2000 Kaji Aso Studio Haiku and Senryu Contest, honorable mention in the World Haiku Festival 2000, First Prize in the People's 2nd Annual International Haiku and Senryu Contest (1999), and honorable mention in the 1998 Itoen International Haiku Contest. A rengay, "Talons in the Chimney", written in collaboration with Ferris Gilli and Peggy Willis Lyles, won first place in the rengay/renku category of the 2000-01 Awards in Chiyo's Corner.
