Shooting My Poetry Mouth Off

My first book of free verse poems, Breakdown, was a Finalist for the 2009 Indy Awards for Poetry. My poems and stories appear in some of the top literary mags in the US – Sou’wester, many mountains moving, Shenandoah, Witness, Cream City Review, Artful Dodge, 2River, etc. I edited the anthology Taboo Haiku, and my own haiku appear in Modern Haiku, The Heron’s Nest, Simply Haiku, Frogpond, bottle rockets, Gean Tree and a bunch of other places I can’t remember right now.  I apologize to those magazines.  I have offered training workshops for teachers from K-college on how to teach haiku, through both the Duke University East Asia and Pacific Studies Department, and the World View conference.  I’ve been teaching haiku to children in school and community settings for over two decades.  I’ve also published 2 novels, a story collection, and 4 plays.  I’ve been fortunate to have received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the NC Arts Council(twice), and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.  I teach online Ficiton Writing for UNC Chapel Hill, and won their Excellence in Teaching Award for 2009.

I’ve worked extensively with people in homeless shelters, women’s shelters, prisons, literacy classes, and community sites, teaching writing.
