I have no idea if this will be there tomorrow, but it's worth a read...

Dylan and I just made it back from E.T. He laughed off and on during the show, getting a big kick out E.T. talking and walking. He got a bit tired (sad) at the end though and sat in my lap. We made it through though and all's well.

I just wanted to drop a brief note letting you know my haiku site, Moments... has been updated. Drop by for a visit sometime. ;)

This month we have two new haikuists and some new haiku from two resident poets.

We have some wonderful haiga from Borivoj Bukva.

Also received haiku contributions to our visual haiku section, for photos 1, 2 3 and 4.

A new photograph has been uploaded to the site for the visual haiku for May, I'd love to hear from you.

And I've added a search engine on the main page to search the site plus the web in general.

Thank you for your time. ;)

Michael Rehling and friends have launched a new site, the Haiku Hut. They do not focus solely on haiku though. Instead, they "specialize in Haiku, Senyru, Tanka, and other 'short forms' of poetry."

Anyway, they're inviting people to stop by and celebrate Poetry Month with them.

The April issue of The Heron's Nest is out. Every month, on the web and in a paper edition, the Nest is home to fine haiku. Check it out today.

We were up at 4:30, went to the lakeside service from 6ish to 7ish, and then went for breakfast. My mom came up from Austin and we had a little Easter egg hunt. We meaning Dylan, Casey slept through it.

Here's an old Easter haiku...

Easter evening--
a single green egg
in the birdbath

Acorn No. 5 (Fall 2000)

There's a picture in the homelife section of my mom and the boys after Casey woke up and started eating his share of the spoils.

A pretty good day so far.

Snapshots 9 arrived today after being delayed for months by a printer. This journal is one of my favorites, so I read through it right away. I'll go back and savor it on Monday.

Anyway, John Barlow (editor) and Matt Morden (associate editor) produced another excellent issue. There are roughly 40 poets and over 100 haiku included this time around.

They even had room for three of mine:

twilight shadows
the outline of a child
in sidewalk chalk

without a net
the scarecrow catches
old butterflies

autumn mist
my neighbour goes inside
without a word

Snapshots is great....give it a try.

Well, we missed the Easter egg hunts. It rained all night and most of the morning. We'll have one for the boys in the morning after leaving some carrots out...

We'll do that after attending a sunrise service at the lake.

Now that this is live, I need to point to some recent pictures of my kids so that relatives can find them. They're in the homelife section for the 7th.

haijinx II:1 has been live for 4.5 hours. The first error was caught by soji and we corrected it quickly enough...

Welcome to my little blog.

The links at the left are divided by the blog:home link. The things above it are external to the blog. The things below it are basic sorts of past blog entries. So, if you click on blog:haijinx, you will only see haijinx entries. blog:homelife will get you just things that happen around here. It's homelife where you will find pictures of my kids and the like.

On the right is a calendar, go to whenver you want. This blog was started in March, so there is nothing before then.

haijinx: volume II, issue 1 (spring 2002)

The new issue of haijinx is now online.

haijinx is an international, web-based journal that focuses on the role of humor in haiku in an effort to keep haiku fresh. This issue contains more than 80 new and used haiku from over 50 haijin worldwide.

In addition, we spotlight the work of three haijin: Janice M. Bostok of Australia, Peggy Willis Lyles of the United States, and Ryu Yotsuya of Japan. They share their thoughts on humor and haiku as well.

This issue includes two additional articles on humor and haiku:

Patrick Gallagher discusses a dictum of Yatsuka Ishihara in "Tell About the Truth As If It Were False".

William J. Higginson resumes a discussion of Bashô's humor with "Cosmic Humor".

During the production of this issue, two of our friends have passed away. Bob Spiess, the long-time editor of Modern Haiku, is remembered by Billie Wilson in Mentor to Many. Niji Fuyuno, a talented poet and wife of Ryu Yotsuya, passed away in February. Niji is remembered by Serge Tomé in Lightness and Grace.

This issue of haijinx is dedicated to Ryu and Niji.

We have continued to expand our list of regular features. New in this issue is "juxtaposé" where Mark Brooks will juxtapose two haiku, one classic and one modern, to create an exposé of their intertextual relationships. I present two haiku, talk a bit about the history of each one, and see how they compare. This month we have fun with Bashô and Michael Dylan Welch.

"light seasonings", a dialog between Takashi Nonin and Carmen Sterba, returns with a discussion of cherry blossoms (sakura). This is also available in Japanese.

And "editors' picks" is back with our favorites from haijinx I:2.

haijinx now publishes reviews. In this issue, read about Flamingo Shapes by John Barlow and Thunderbolt by Takatoshi Gotoh. Also, take a look at our materials received section and find out how to send your items to us for future notices and possible review.

As a bonus, there are online biographies of the contributors to haijinx. These can include links to their web sites, the journals where they have published, and the contests they have won.

Also, today we announce a few new projects: the john crook award for haiku with humor, the haijinx weekly wire, and the haikai.info | haikai.org project. Rather than bury you in details, you can read about those projects at the start of this issue.

We are very interested in your feedback and in your submissions for the next issue. Feedback can be sent through the address on our letters page

Submission information, including deadlines, can be found here.

haijinx could not be here without the Internet haiku community. Thank you all, especially the contributors to this issue and the people who have helped us out behind the scenes.

And thanks to you for reading haijinx. I hope you find both quality and something worth laughing about.

"The most wasted of all days is one without laughter." [~] e e cummings

Best wishes,

Kuniharu Shimizu, artist-in-residence, JP

Takashi Nonin, staff contributor, JP

haijinx II:1 is closer to a reality. Everything is done now except for the move from epiphanous to haikai.info. I'll complete that by the morning and spend the next 24 hours making changes and edits and dealing with whatever else the proofreaders find. We release Friday morning and I can't wait.

Yuck!

Yesterday my Sony Clié fell out of its pouch. I picked it up, saw that it worked, felt real happy, and moved on.

This morning I found out that the memory stick fell out. I didn't enjoy that, but it was ok until I remembered that my digital saijiki is on the stick and not in main memory.

So, I drove to where I dropped the Clié and found the stick. It won't work though, it had been run over. The case looks intact but nothing happens when it is inserted.

I'm not sure how much of my data entry is lost. I back up pretty regularly, but all of that is on the old machine. I haven't moved it over yet.

10:03:15 AM  |

Everything is online now for the issue itself. While the proofreaders continue their work, I'll work on the t-shirts, hww, and haikai.info.

We're very close now!

Karen and I went out on a date last night...dinner and some running around. The kids love the new babysitter, so things are looking good there. I also gave in and got seven hours of sleep. Took the night off from haijinx. I needed the break.
